bcc Berlin Congress Center the congress hall

The ‘Haus des Lehrers’ (House of the Teacher) and the adjacent congress hall, which today is home to the bcc Berlin Congress Center, characterise the immediate neighbourhood of Alexanderplatz. The futuristic building complex was constructed in the early 1960s by architect Hermann Henselmann, an East Germany star architect who was influenced by the "Bauhaus", and focuses on functionality and transparency. The bcc is easily recognisable by its aluminium cupola which is also its largest function room with seats for a 1,000-strong audience. Overall the bcc has over 30 function rooms and 3,000 km² exhibition space. After a temporary closure in the 1990s, the listed building was reopened in 2003 after extensive refurbishing under its new name bcc. Its foyer offers an attractive view of Alexanderplatz. The neighbouring 12-storey ‘Haus des Lehrers’ is a typical example of post-war modernism, and features one of the largest pieces of art in Europe, a 125 metres long wall frieze entitled ‘Unser Leben’ (Our Life) by Walter Womacka that spans the entire building. Together, the two buildings form one of the well-known landmarks of Alexanderplatz. On top of other meetings and events, around 50 large-scale conferences take place every year at the bcc – usually top-ranking national and international events. Each of these attracts between 500 and 1,000 attendees and may last for up to three days.
